From Belfast – According to research in the British Journal of Cancer, skin cancer increases the risk of developing additional cancers. In a study of 23000 people treated for skin cancer, researchers found that the risk of developing a new cancer was double in those with melanoma. The increased risk was for other types of skin cancer, and smoking-related cancer. About 60% of melanomas and 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers come from UV exposure. From Alabama – According to research in the New England Journal of Medicine, early repeat cesareans increase the risk of complications. In a study of over 13000 women, researchers found that elective repeat cesareans done before 39 weeks of gestation lead to a higher risk of the baby suffering from complications including respiratory distress and requiring admission to the NICU. Between 1996 and 2006, the rate of cesarean births in the US increased from 20% to 31%. And finally, from Atlanta – According to a study published in the CDC’s National Vital Statistics Reports, the teen birth rate in the US has risen for the first time in 15 years. According to the study, the birth rate among girls aged 15 to 19 increased by 3% in 2006. The states with the highest rates were Mississippi, New Mexico and Texas at over 60 births per 1000 girls. New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts had the lowest rates at around 20 per 1000. For Insidermedicine in 60, I’m Dr. Susan Sharma.

webhatchlings.com July 1, 2006 will always be remembered as a low point in our lives. Adelaine was Diagnosed with ALL Leukemia at the age of 2. She was declared in remission – cancer free within a couple days. We know God took cancer away from her less than 24 hours after diagnosis. The real battle was the nearly 2 ½ year treatment protocol of Chemotherapy, steroids and every other medicine with life threatening side effects. During her treatment, we met some incredible people going through similar battles with their children. We were introduced to some AMAZING organizations and we also became unbelievably health conscious. I threw this video together to say goodbye to treatment forever. 2009 is already a great year for us. No More CHEMO!!!

This was a song I wrote for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s TNT Fall 2009 Run/Walk team aka Team Ecstatic. Every team gets a name (eg my first team was “Team Tough”). I had the privilege of being a mentor on Team Ecstatic . More than 100 people were on our team, and it was great to see previous non-runners complete their first half and full marathons. More importantly, we raised almost $200K for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to support patient research and services. As always, it was a very rewarding season. A special shout-out goes to Coach Raji who is currently battling her disease. Keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers and hope for a miracle. (UPDATE 12/05/2009) Coach Raji passed away today. She was a truly wonderful person and spirit that will be missed. RIP GO TEAM! ============== Just to clarify, our head coach, Coach Al, has many sayings that he uses. I tried to incorporate these sayings into the song such as: East Bay, ROCKS! It’s mind over matter…if you don’t mind it don’t matter We don’t run up hills we run through them Let’s do the damn thing The East Bay walks and runs Smooooth Too many damn names It was rather difficult to find words ending in ‘ic” that made sense. So I had some fun with it. LYRICS: We’re ecstatic, not static And our running is very automatic We trained in the cold, in the East Bay, in the autumn And now we walk/run smooth just like a baby’s bottom Oh Team Ecstatic Your awesomeness is fantastic Do you run up the hill …
Filed under Lymphoma | Comments (5)TNF Blockers and Cancer in Children (November 2009)
FDA is requiring stronger warnings about an increased risk of lymphoma and other cancers in children and adolescents who are treated with drugs that block tumor necrosis factor. TNF blockers include Remicade (infliximab), Enbrel (etancercept), Humira (adalimumab), Cimzia (certolizumab pegol), and Simponi (golimumab). These drugs are used to treat juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and other inflammatory diseases. The warnings, which include an updated boxed warning, are based on an FDA analysis of reports of cancer that occurred in children and adolescents treated with TNF-blockers. The cancers, some of which were fatal, occurred after an average of 30 months of treatment. About half of the cancers were lymphomas. The labeling will also include updated information on cases of leukemia and new onset psoriasis associated with TNF-blockers. Healthcare professionals should monitor patients for development of malignancies during and after treatment with TNF blockers. They should also talk to patients and their families about this risk and tell them to report signs and symptoms of cancer such as unexplained weight loss or fatigue, easy bruising or bleeding, or swollen lymph nodes in the neck, underarms or groin. Patients should also be monitored for signs or symptoms of new onset psoriasis or worsening psoriasis. The patient Medication Guide will be updated with this new information.
