Complete Information on Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis With Treatment and Prevention

January 1st, 2010

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is an uncommon inherited disease. The disease seems to be caused by several distinct man papillomaviruses. It is a lifelong, viral-mediated, autosomal recessive disorder affecting the skin. These are viruses that affect a person’s DNA. Most of these viruses are harmless to people, except to those people with epidermodysplasia verruciformis. It is believed to be caused by the human papillomavirus. Genetic predisposition is also thought to partly explain why the disease is so rare, as epidermodysplasia verruciformis papillomaviruses are often found in normal skin with no increased incidence of cancer. In the general population infection with some subtypes of human papillomaviruseshave minimal or no clinical effect, however in patients with EV, infection with these same subtypes can cause flat, wart-like lesions.

Patients typically submit early in childhood with thin wart-like lesions of the dorsal hands, extremities, confront, and neck. The disease manifests as an inborn kind in infancy, during childhood, or at puberty. The disease normally manifests as small flat warts in very young people. In most cases these warts occur in bunches numbering well over a hundred warts. The warts normally occur on sun exposed extremities, however, they can occur on any part of the body. Numerous specific human papillomavirus types have been detected in this disease. Multiple nonmelanoma skin cancers are commonly seen in such patients; thus, early diagnosis is beneficial. Patients with EV are immunotolerant towards own epidermodysplasia verruciformis human papillomaviruses throughout the whole life, whereas the oncogenic types of epidermodysplasia verruciformis human papillomaviruses induce cancers.

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis is characterized by chronic transmission with human papillomavirus. Widespread rind eruptions of flat-to-papillomatous, wartlike lesions and reddish-brown pigmented plaques on the body, the hands, the upper and lower extremities, and the cheek are normal. Skin cancers initially appear on sun-exposed areas, such as the face and the ear lobes. Patients with epidermodysplasia verruciformis have a defective cell-mediated immune response to HPV infection. Many of the HPV types found in EV lesions are nonpathogenic to the general population. Cells with early signs of malignant transformation have been found closely connected with virus-infected epidermal regions. Tumors are locally destructive without treatment. In most cases the warts occur in clusters and can be anything from a few warts to over a hundred warts.

The new handling for epidermodysplasia verruciformis includes the consumption of liquid nitrogen to suspend away the warts or by using retinoids. The new kind of handling is surgically removing the warts that move into cancer. These treatments help slow down the disease but they do not prevent new warts or cancers from forming. Surgery is also indicated for treatment of malignant lesions. Verruciformis must avoid the sun as much as possible. The UV rays from the sun are harmful to all people but it can be deadly for a person with epidermodysplasia verruciformis. Sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin everyday. A person with this disease should eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as the vitamins will help restore the skin. If a person takes these precautions it will help slow the spread of the disease. Oral and topical treatment with retinoids, fluorouracil and imiquimod are proving to be useful agents.

Read the Truth About Tanning Booths

December 31st, 2009

It’s the beginning of summer, and you’ve been working hard. You haven’t had time to spend hours in the sunlight getting the tan your friends will envy. The nearby salon just invested in a tanning booth. It will take only a few sessions to achieve the glow you usually spend weeks working to get. Is it worth it?

Tanning booths allow people to enter them and stand while tanning. Handles are available so people can rest their arms above their heads and tan along their sides. Because tanners are standing, they don’t have to worry about the tan’s evenness being affected by the pressure of their bodies against the bed’s surface.

In addition, people who prefer tanning booths argue that they tan faster. Many people, however, are more sensitive to ultraviolet rays. These people may face a significantly higher risk of sunburns, rashes, and skin irritation because of using tanning booths.

Tanning booths use more powerful lights than tanning beds. Most tanning beds use lights with about 100 watts of power, while tanning booth lights provide about 160 watts. Ultraviolet rays (responsible for tanning, but also for skin cancer) from tanning beds are twice as powerful as natural sunlight. Tanning booths expose people to ultraviolet rays three times more damaging than sun exposure.

Many people argue that tanning booths are a more hygienic route to that perfect skin glow.

Is this really the case, though? These methods of tanning are, in fact, no more sanitary than tanning beds, as long as the beds are cleaned properly between individual uses.

People who use tanning booths also risk an increased likelihood of developing skin cancer. The increased intensity of ultraviolet rays thins skin faster and makes it more susceptible to damage. The latest research indicates that women who use tanning beds more than once a month have a risk of malignant melanoma more than 50 percent higher than women who do not.

Malignant melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer. People who visit tanning salons also risk developing nonmelanoma skin cancers as well. Although more easily treated, these cancers can cause serious damage, scarring, and even death if not treated properly.

If you are seriously considering starting a tanning regimen, and have decided that you must visit a tanning booth, protect yourself. Wear eye protection and sunscreen while tanning. Check your skin for changes at least monthly. Finally, seriously consider that you are exposing yourself to a much higher risk of skin cancer.

Squamous Cell Epithelioma – Prevention Tips and Treatment Methods

December 31st, 2009

Skin cancers are the most common cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma is cancer that begins in the squamous cells, which are thin, flat cells that look like fish scales under the microscope. Squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the third most common form of skin cancer. About 20% of nonmelanoma skin cancers are caused by cSCC and 80% by BCC. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin occurs roughly one-quarter as often as basal cell carcinoma. Light-colored skin and a history of sun exposure are even more important in predisposing to this kind of cancer than to basal cell carcinoma. These include exposure to arsenic, hydrocarbons, heat, or x-rays. Some squamous cell carcinomas arise in scar tissue.

Squamous cell cancers that start out within solar keratoses or on sun damaged skin are easier to cure and metastasize less often than those that develop in traumatic or radiation scars. The incidence is rising worldwide2 and although not a cause of high mortality considerable cost . About 70% of cSCCs appear on the skin of the head and neck. The single most important factor in producing squamous cell carcinomas is sun exposure. Many such growths can develop from precancerous spots, called actinic or solar keratoses. Sun damage takes many years to promote skin cancer. Some squamous cell carcinomas arise in scar tissue. Suppression of the immune system by infection or drugs may also promote such growths.

Squamous cell carcinoma in the black patient proved to be rapidly metastatic and eventually fatal. The white patient developed seven squamous cell carcinomas over 8 years with no evidence of metastatic spread. Treatment of squamous cell carcinoma are similar to those for basal cell carcinoma. Radiation treatments for skin cancer occurring in areas that are difficult to treat with surgery. Other Cryosurgery technique achieve good results by freezing basal cell carcinomas. Typically, liquid nitrogen is applied to the growth to freeze and kill the abnormal cells. Avoiding unprotected exposure to the sun during peak radiation times. Wearing broad-brimmed hats and tightly-woven protective clothing while outdoors in the sun.

Squamous Cell Epithelioma – Prevention and Treatment Tips

1. Avoiding unprotected exposure to the sun during peak radiation times.

2. Wearing broad-brimmed hats and tightly-woven protective clothing while outdoors in the sun.

3. Surgical excision is cut out and stitched up.

4. Radiation therapy is a also useful treatment

5. Cryosurgery technique achieve good results by freezing basal cell carcinomas.

6. Mohs micrographic surgery technique of removing skin cancer is better termed.

Don’t forget your hands!

December 30th, 2009

by Lety Soto CMA

When you think about protecting your skin from the sun, what comes first to mind? Your face? Your neck? What about your hands? Unless you always wear gloves, your hands receive a tremendous amount of sun exposure over time. And about 90 percent of the visible skin changes attributed to aging – which appear on your hands as wrinkles, brown spots and leathery skin – are caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The majority of basal and squamous cell carcinomas (BCCs and SCCs) – the main nonmelanoma skin cancers, adding up to over a million malignancies a year – are also caused by UV exposure. According to Neil Sadick, MD, actinic keratoses (the most common skin precancers) and squamous cell carcinomas are the most common lesions on the hands. Treat Them Right When people think of hand care they usually think about moisturizer. This is because the hands are prone to dryness, due to the skin’s thinness and small number of oil glands. This tendency is exacerbated by hand washing. Although common moisturizers temporarily relieve parched skin, they do nothing to prevent sun damage. So instead of just slathering on lotion or cream, use a moisturizing sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and some combination of the following UVA-filtering ingredients: stabilized avobenzone, ecamsule (a.k.a. MexorylTM), oxybenzone, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. -Excerpt from skincancer.org Dr. Dima’s Cosminology carries Cosmic Ray Sheild SPF36 Your Skin’s Solar EclipseTM, it gives earth angel skin a dose of antioxidants while lightly hydrating. Daily use is proven to delay environmental aging and help prevent skin cancer. Formulated with exclusive botanical antioxidants and micronized zinc to help prevent the breakdown of collagen. To take your prevention one step further you should also incorporate a topical vitamin C. Clinical grade topical vitamin C will help prevent cell or DNA damage from free radicals caused by UV rays. Big Bang Those Light Years Away Hi-Plutonic C Daylight Anti-Oxidant CreamTM quick-absorbing moisturizer protects against typical signs of cosmic damage such as wrinkling and age spots. Once you have been given the all clear you can treat your visible signs of sun damage cosmetically, ask your doctor which treatment they think is right for you. Some options may be lasers or chemical peels that remove the skin’s top layer to reveal less damaged tissue beneath. There is also a treatment called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) done with Blu U technology, PDT is a treatment for the pre-cancerous skin lesions known as Actinic Keratoses (AK). After your treatment remember to protect your hands daily with sunscreen all year long and reapply often as necessary.

Safe Fun in the Sun

December 29th, 2009

Summer has arrived and it is hot! What should you do to protect yourself from the suns’ harmful rays? With all of the choices out there what do you look for in a sunscreen?  These are questions we all ask ourselves every year when the weather warms up. I suggest starting with a sunscreen that has broad spectrum coverage, includes zinc or titanium dioxide, is stable in sunlight, and contains as few hazardous ingredients as possible. How do you read the label to determine what might be hazardous to your health? I recommend investing in a book called “A Consumers Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients” .By Ruth Winter, M.S.  You would be amazed at the health hazards disguised as personal care products, even baby products and sunscreen.  When choosing a sunscreen also look for products that have an SPF of a least 15 or higher, and come in a cream or liquid that can not be inhaled.  It is important to have both UVA and UVB production. Think of UVA as aging rays and UVB as burning rays. You don’t want a product that just prevents you from burning, but will not protect you from those hard to get rid of age spots later in life. You also don’t want to a product that just prevents dark brown spots, but leaves you looking like a boiled tomato.

We  also often overlook the health risks associated with too much sun exposure, and why it is so important to protect your skin from sun damage. Here is a list of a few things caused by being in the sun under protected, and over exposed.

·         Melanoma skin cancer: The most serious form of skin cancer, and also the fast growing type of cancer in the US. Scientist now believe there might be a link between our childhood sunburns and developing melanoma later in life. If this type of cancer is caught in time, it is almost always curable. So be very aware of what is on your skin and any changes in your skin. Check out the American Cancer Societies Web Site for what to look for. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/ped_7_1_Skin_Cancer_Detection_What_You_Can_Do.asp

·         Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer: These types of skin cancer are rarely fatal, but never leave any skin cancer left untreated. There are two types: Basal Cell Carcinomas, fleshy non-spreading nodules or bumps, and squamous cell carcinomas, which grow rapid tumors that can spread to other parts of the body.

·         Premature Aging: And then there is the premature aging of the skin that causes the skin to become thick, wrinkled and leathery. This condition can be avoided by proper sun protection! In addition to the damage the sun can do to your looks and long term skin health, it also affects your immune system.

·          Immune System Supression: Sunburns can alter your immune system by affecting your white blood cells and can take up to 24 hours to start doing their job properly after extreme sun exposure.

It hardly seems worth the risk to your health and wellness to go unprotected in these hot summer months. So remember always wear sunscreen, reapply ever two hours, limit your sun exposure when possible, and wear a hat with a wide brim whenever possible. If you follow these recommendations, you can avoid the hazards of the sun and enjoy your summer while looking good for years to come.

Are You At Risk Of Getting Cancer?

December 29th, 2009

However, this young man had faith that he could do it, and in all kinds of weather he ran a marathon a day for weeks, running from the east coast of Canada nearly to Thunder Bay where cancer over took him.

The worst of all and the cancer of the retail path is gossip. Even after the age of 50 you should also not be suffering from cancerous conditions because your body is designed to stop most cases of cancer before they even start.

Previously, the only screening test for prostate cancer was a digital rectal exam. Inhibition of these reactions may help with anti-cancer treatment. For this reason, some treatments include hormone treatment for prostate cancer.

Cancer may be ubiquitous, creating turmoil and despair. Although most age spots are harmless blotches, the early stages of skin cancer can masquerade as innocent looking dark spots. Exposing skin – the face, ear, neck, lips, and the backs of the hands – to the sun causes most nonmelanoma skin cancer.

Also, they were able to walk faster and further in only four weeks and they experienced less cancer related fatigue than the control group. There a pathologist will determine if the cells are skin cancer forming cells. An experienced dermatologist can often determine whether a growth on the skin is or is not cancerous just by looking at it.

If one or both of your breasts are in pain, again it’s important to keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have breast cancer. While doctors don’t fully understand exactly what causes prostate cancer, there are some risk factors that do increase a man’s likelihood of developing this disease. This results in reduced risks of heart disease, cancer and improved immune system functions.

As scientists are researching ways to prevent and treat skin cancer, the results involving green tea are promising. Other diseases related to asbestos are lung cancer and asbestosis. And of course a diet that’s higher in dietary fibre that comes from a vegetarian diet will decrease the likelihood or risk of colon cancer.

This treatment involves the removal of the tumour and some adjacent healthy tissues in order to stem the cancer spread. If the samples reveal skin cancer, the dermatologist will remove the growth in one of a number of ways. In fact, only skin cancer is more common.

Women with breast cancer find that Femara and fertility concerns are congruent. Many health problems ranging from parasites to cancer can result from drinking contaminated water.

It is now possible for researchers to make sense of the causation of a variety of pathological conditions, including cancer, heart disease, atherosclerosis, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and other diseases of old age, and to work towards counteracting and preventing these conditions.

There is an ever-increasing amount of research that suggests certain types of sugars can have an enormous benefit to our health, including boosting human immune response, to inhibiting cancerous tumour growth.

The cause of Mantle cell lymphoma and of the other cancers of the lymphatic system called lymphomas is represented by the errors that can occur in the production of a lymphocyte. Researchers in India discovered a link between the rise in carbonation consumption and esophageal cancer in America over the past two decades.

Actions may not ward off cancer (they did not for me); they will allow time to manage it quickly and wisely.

Before going into some things you can do to avoid prostate cancer it needs to be mentioned that there are unfortunately some obstacles that simply can’t be avoided. By using a sunless tanning lotion you can avoid the skin cancer risk that comes from the sun.

Skin Cancer

December 28th, 2009

Skin cancer may seem small, but in actual is a deadly disease. The cancer begins to develop when the DNA is damaged much ahead of repair. The damaged cells grow and spread at a very uncontrollable rate. Such damage in the skin refers to ‘skin cancer’. These cells continuously multiply resulting in a tumor. Skin cancer generally develops in the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis and the tumor in this case is quite visible. Hence, skin cancer is mostly detected in the initial stages.

One of the most common and predominant reasons behind skin cancer is the excessive exposure to the sun. The ultraviolet rays of the sun tend to damage the DNA. There are two categories of skin cancer, one being the melanoma skin cancer and the other is the nonmelanoma skin cancer. The former out of the two is the deadliest. Besides, there are different kinds of skin cancer that may afflict a person on the basis of the skin cells that they develop in. Out of which, three of them are the main ones. They are; the Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma skin cancer. Also there are two categories of skin cancer, one being the melanoma skin cancer and the other is the nonmelanoma skin cancer. The former out of the two is the deadliest.

Skin cancer can happen to anyone irrespective of their color, skin texture or family history. The two distinct kinds of biopsies that take may place once skin cancer is suspected are the incisional biopsy in which one portion of the skin is removed and the external biopsy in which the tissue as well as the tumor is removed. The best person to get any advice or the necessary treatment for skin cancer would be a reliable and experienced dermatologist.
