INSIDE CBGB: 4 MINUTES OF NOISE, IN TRIBUTE TO HILLY KRISTAL

September 9th, 2010

No more lung cancer for you, Mr. Kristal. You deserve better, just as you gave those who would not fit elsewhere, something better, that they could make as bad as they needed to, so they could feel better. September came early this year, as the bony pruned branches of the former awning at CBGB had been predicting (that is, before that vestige, too, was removed) long before yesterday, the day Hilly Kristal, whose fate it was to simply open up a business that served live music, shuffled off this mortal coil. Last week I happened to interview Johnny Lydon and his most passionate moments came when he was discussing “that theatre royale of youth rebellion” (I’ll put up the interview in a minute), the live music setting. I had hell’s own time getting this video up all through last night. It’s the first of several from the last week of gigs at CBGB’s — it’s just a chaotic visual glide though this very dark space, shot in one take with natural sound. It’s just a messs, like CBs; an unintended study in darkness and chaos with splashes of red. Dub Trio were opening for Bad Brains. I have footage of Fishbone peforming during the last week as well as Bad Brains’ final performance at CBGB, which I’ll be posting through the weekend. I ran across town soon as I could get away, to find my CBs footage when I got the news, missing editorial meetings and blog postings. Fuck it. More words and video en route at URB.com No more lung cancer for you, Mr. Kristal. You deserve better, just as

He later died of lung cancer, after beating the neck cancer. I miss him very much. Please don’t smoke. Rest in peace my dad

September 5th, 2010

Mario Fonbuena was a great dad with great characteristic and I have learned a lot from him over the years. Our relationship has not always been perfect, but one thing he did do, although sometimes it took me quite a while to notice, was set a good example when it came to money and life issues. He died of Lung cancer in Lung Centre of the philippines on March 4 2009 at the age of 51. I will never forget my father, nor will anyone who’s lives he touched. We love you Dad and we are truly missing you now. Thank you Lord for giving me such a wonderful GUY like him. Rest In Peace Dad Mario Fonbuena
