Imbalances in the rates of cell division and cell death can lead to tumor growth in a tissue. Other events are usually required before metastasis can occur. Environmental stimuli, or carcinogens, such as tobacco smoke, radiation, chemicals, or infectious agents, can cause cancer. Cancer can also occur in young children and adolescents, but it is rare. Some studies have concluded that pediatric cancers, especially leukemia, are on an upward trend.

Cancer is caused by exposure to carcinogens (cancer causing substances), which alter and damage DNA. Cancers are classified by the type of cell that resembles the tumor and, therefore, the tissue presumed to be the origin of the tumor. Carcinoma often develops as a result of a very improper lifestyle. Carcinoma: malignant tumors derived from epithelial cells. This group represents the most common cancers, including the common forms of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer. Lymphoma and Leukemia: malignant tumors derived from blood and bone marrow cells Sarcoma: malignant tumors derived from connective tissue, or esenchymal cells. Mesothelioma: tumors derived from the mesothelial cells lining the peritoneum and the pleura. Glioma: tumors derived from glia, the most common type of brain cell. Germ cell tumor: tumors derived from reproductive cells, most commonly found in the testicle and ovary. Female and male infants have essentially the same overall cancer incidence rates, but white infants have substantially higher cancer rates than black infants for most cancer types. Relative survival for infants is very good for neuroblastoma, Wilms’ tumor and retinoblastoma, and fairly good (80%) for leukemia, but not for most other types of cancer.

How Can Asbestos Enter My Body?

Asbestos enters our bodies by inhaling airborne particles, or ingesting those that land in food or drink. Some of the asbestos fibers are inhaled and rain out in saliva and are swallowed. Others are inhaled and either work their way through our lung tissue and lodge in the lining that surrounds the lungs. Other particles are trapped in mucous that is naturally flushed out of our lungs and swallowed. Particles that are swallowed can penetrate our stomachs and lodge in the peritoneal lining around the stomach. Asbestos exposure can cause asbestosis, mesothelioma and more rarely or indirectly, lung cancer, especially in smokers.

Once these fibers lodge in body tissue, they tend to stay in place where they cause irritation, inflammation and scarring. Depending upon where they lodge, they can cause different diseases.

Asbestosis is a fibrotic disease of the lungs. Asbestos fibers trapped in the lung tissue cause inflammation that in turn grows scar tissue as the tissue heals. Scar tissue is more fibrous than the tissue it healed over, and is less elastic than lung tissue. Because it hasn’t got the same flexibility, it cannot expand and contract, and restricts the ability of the lungs to inhale as deeply as they should. Not only is asbestos a fibrotic disease is it a chronic restrictive lung disease.

Mesothelioma is another common disease associated with asbestos exposure. When the asbestos fibers work their way completely through the lungs, they can still lodge in the mesothelial lining that wraps around the lungs. Here they cause inflammation, plaques, and scar tissue that can, after many years, develop into a malignant tumor.

Asbestos fibers can enter the stomach either through directly ingesting them. If airborne particles land on food or in drinks, this would give them direct entry to the stomach. Other particles that are inhaled can adhere to the moisture in a person’s mouth or throat and simply be swallowed. Fibers that were inhaled into the lung might simply be flushed out as cilia in the lungs move mucous out in a normal cleansing process, or can be coughed up and swallowed.

Asbestos fibers that are swallowed can move through the stomach muscles into the abdominal wall that is lined with mesothelium, where it is called the peritoneum. As with the pleural mesothelium, fibers can cause inflammation and scarring, and eventually, tumors.

Far more rarely do asbestos fiber cause testicular mesothelioma or pericardial mesothelioma. In Testicular mesothelioma the peritoneal sac that lines the abdomen just above the testicles has developed cancerous cells. Pericardial mesothelioma involves the membrane that lines the cardiac cavity and the heart itself.

Depending on the part of the body where it appears, mesothelium is referred to in different ways. If it covers the organs located in the abdominal cavity, it is called the peritoneum. In the uterus, it is called the tunica serosa uteri and in the reproductive organs of the male, it is referred to as the tunica vaginalis testis.

It can also affect people who are living with a person who has been exposed to asbestos. This doesn’t limit mesothelioma to this group of people, however. How is mesothelioma diagnosed?

However, there are certain tests that a doctor may perform, including a physical examination, chest x-ray, CBC or complete blood count, removal of tissue samples for biopsy, bronchoscopy and thoracotomy. Some of the symptoms that merit a visit to the doctor include: difficulty in breathing, chest pain (usually located beneath the rib cage), lumps, swelling or pain in the abdomen and unexplained weight loss.

The most common treatment for mesothelioma is surgery, where a part of the affected part is removed, along with some of the surrounding tissue. This is the treatment that is often used during the early stages of the disease. It helps slow the progression of the disease and can help reduce the symptoms. In cases where the diseased has progressed extensively, other treatment options are considered.

Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy removes cancer cells by using high energy radiation beams. Radiotherapy is effective in removing cancer cells that may remain even after surgery. To ensure that radiation beams hit the target cells, x-rays and computer imaging are also used during the process. This makes sure that only cancer cells are destroyed and reduces the number of healthy cells that are affected.

Radiotherapy is also used as a palliative form of treatment and helps control the spread (metastases) of the cancer. It is also helpful in alleviating symptoms like difficulty in breathing and pain.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is often administered intravenously or through the use of catheters, allowing anti-cancer drugs to enter the blood stream quickly. It is often recommended for patients who cannot undergo a surgical procedure.

Chemotherapy has some side effects, including nausea, vomiting, fever, fatigue, diarrhea or constipation. Bruises may also appear and even sores in the throat or mouth area. The kind of symptoms that appear in a patient depends on the chemotherapy treatment, dosage and on that particular patient’s reaction.

These treatments are mean to remove as much of the cancerous tumors as possible and to provide relief from painful symptoms. They are also meant to help prolong the life of the patient.

Is there a cure for mesothelioma?

Further research and clinical trials are being performed to help find the best treatments that are the most effective against mesothelioma. No cure has been discovered yet. As of now, early detection and treatments have been showing better and better survival rates. Like lung cancer, mesothelioma can be halted if it is detected earlier.
